Kid's Books Anyone?
If you're not interested in kids books please ignore this post (but you should be interested in kids books cuz they're awesome.)
I would love the opinion of anyone who loves kids books (children's literature) as to books I should buy for myself and for my class.
This year, I have read to the class Maniac Magee by Jerri Spinelli and Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. They're pretty good books although maybe not my favorites. The next book I'm going to read is The Legend of Jimmy Spoon by Kristiana Gregory. After that I plan to read The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo as it seems awfully adventurous. I also just bought The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin because I thought a mystery would be fun. Although I've never read the book, it seems very interesting.
My personal favorites always include fantasy, adventure, and far out tales like A Wrinkle in Time, Matilda (and all of Roald Dahl), Holes, and my heart will always belong to the Harry Potter series.
So...anybody gots some favorite kids books?

The Indian in the Cupboard is one of my favorites.
Just about anything by Roald Dahl, I can dig.
I consider The Giver one of the best books I've ever read....
Definatly the Indian in the Cupboard but also the Bunnicula series. I've recently started rereading the Narnia Tales. And don't forget anything by Judy Bloom or Beverly Clearly.
Check in with Monkey, she's huge on the kids books. I like old school stuff like sendak and Scarry.
tommy- sadly, i have seen the movie for Indian in the Cupboard and not read the book. i would agree with you if you said that's a shame. again, i could eat roald dahl with a spoon. The Giver is, i think, incredible. many disagree.
diane- i'll have to check out Bunnicula. that one's new to me.
calzone- i also like old school, but sendkah and scarry are a little too primary. don't think they don't read them though.
Monkey is NOT a "she", calzone, and he would not appreciate being called so...again. I could check with monkey's human though if you think she'd have good suggestions ;).
everything on my blogger page is in spanish. me thinks something is askew.
I thought you taught little kids. I'm so self absorbed.
Monkey is going to be soooo pissed when he finds out that Calzone called him a girl.
I LOVE children's books. I get fuzzy on what is appropriate for different age groups. But if we are talking about The Tale of Despereaux (so much fun!) and A Wrinkle in Time, I have a few recommendations you could check out. The bummer is, it seems that some of the best books are written with girls in mind. With that said, here's my list.
"Bud, Not Buddy" is wonderful.
"Julie of the Wolves" ... I read this again as an adult and still loved it. Incredible. Boys might enjoy this too, as she is a tomboy and there is a lot about wolves.... doh!
"From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler "... one of my all time favorites. I must have read it over 10 times as a kid.
"The Phantom Tollbooth" and of course "James and the Giant Peach"
"Stuart Little"
"The Secret Garden" loved this book so much, but it's a little dated for kids now, I guess.
A fried of mine who is 10 recently read "Because of Winn-Dixie" and she loved it, but I haven't read it.
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" ~ I actually read this aloud to my son who is 6 last year and even he was fascinated. I read it over 10 times along with the rest of them as a kid.
"All-of-a-kind Family"
I have more, but I'm not sure if I'm in the right age group. I love reading and I love kids. This is a favorite subject of mine. I'm so happy that my son enjoys reading as much as I do, although he is behind his classmates in actual "reading". Oh well.
One great thing about our school is that they've done a fantastic job with their Reading program. I'm delighted with how much love for reading has been instilled in our kids.
You're so in the right age group. I could read a wide range of levels to these kids.
All of the ones you mentioned are also faves of mine except that I haven't read "Julie of the Wolves", but would love to check it out or "All-of-a-kind Family". I've never even heard of the second one, but upon checking it out, I think it would be perfect to read this year!
I think it'd be interesting to read some C.S. Lewis too. I think they'd really enjoy it.
Also- I wouldn't fret too much that your son is "behind" his classmates especially if he has a love for reading. There are so many different possible reasons for that.
Well, I love kids book too. In fact, as a frog, I'm part of it!!
(really the best philosofical kids book you can buy)
