Three movies, one weekend. I haven't rented three movies since I canceled my unlimited monthly deal thingy [at least I'm pretty sure that's what it's called]. I was looking forward to taking my selections up to the counter and having the guy at the desk be super impressed with my awesome selections, but unfortunately for me, he was a dumbass. I waited for him to comment on what a genius I was for picking the movies I did, and when he said nothing, I prompted him with, "So, have you seen any of these?" to which he replied, "Nope," and sensing my disapproval, he added, "John Malkovich is a good actor though." Then, I gave him a chuckle that said I'm sure said, "You're such a retard." Anyway, here are the movies I watched:

Notes on a Scandal

I remember when a friend recommended this movie to me, and I laughed at him for recommending a movie about a teacher/student affair to a teacher. I'd argue, however, that this story is much less about an affair and more about severe loneliness and desperation. To sum it up in one word...It's "creepy." The movie ultimately leaves you with an eerie feeling. It's probably worth seeing, because Cate Blanchett doesn't choose crap. She's very choosy and she actually asked for this part. Additionally, Bill Nighy is in it, and he is fabulous. It's well done and worth renting, but you will not be left with a good feeling.



Colour Me Kubrick

Oh my god, I heart this film. I don't give a stink about the bad reviews; I think it's genius. John Malkovich really does have my heart. He's so, so, so, so odd. If you watch the extras, he's as weird as Allen Conway, the character he plays. He makes me uncomfortable in a good way. This is the kind of movie that I think about for days and days. One of the things that strikes me is that it almost doesn't matter who we really are, people believe that we are whoever we pretend to be. That's scary, but strangely powerful information. It also has some fantastic lines. I laughed out loud so many times. One of my favorites was something like, "Imagine how big Jesus woulda been if only he'd have played the guitar." I will buy this movie.



The Science of Sleep

I've been waiting so long for the chance to see this movie. It was worth the wait. For one, Gael Garcia Bernal is the cutest human alive. He makes me week. Apart from that, it's the kind of movie that transports you and you can't help ending up a little more of a creative person just from having watched it. It's a great story about love and creativity and the magic of dreams. Watch, watch, watch it. I can't wait to buy it so I can watch it over and over. I'm watching it again now.
